The sophisticated interior features soothing colours, plenty of storage space and a layout designed to put all occupants at ease. The dashboard features a wide gloss black panel that accentuates the overall design, while the stylish door trims offer voluminous storage space. Kia launches all-new Carnival
Kia have replaced their much loved Grand Sedona with the all-new Carnival. Fitting perfectly into the segment between SUVs and utilitarian people movers, the Carnival offers the best of both worlds in terms of advanced technologies as well as a new engine, platform and a luxurious cabin.
The modern design incorporates the brand’s visual language found on their line of SUVs such as the Sorento, Seltos and Sonet. Kia’s modernised tiger nose grille affords substantial width to the face and artfully integrates high-tech LED headlamps. A bold cutline runs the length of the vehicle, joining the front and rear lamps, while the SUV aesthetic is enhanced by the addition of a rear skid plate garnish and reflectors as well as 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the three-row seven or eight seater offers premium levels of refinement, savvy technology and flexibility. Sleek design elements and quality materials come together to create a refined, harmonious, sophisticated space. The central stack boasts a premium finish thanks to high-gloss black surfaces. Integrated slim metal effect air vents add a modern touch that is enhanced by two-tone leather trim. With all the seats in the upright position the Carnival offers 1 139 litres of luggage space, which can be expanded to 4 110 litres with the removal of the second row and stowage of the third row. Seven-seat versions offer two individual second-row chairs matching the front seats. On the mid-range EX+ derivative, Slide Flex seating for eight passengers allows multiple configurations including a sliding second row. Innovative features include hands-free electric sliding side doors with Smart Key as well as a Smart Power liftgate with auto-close to make loading and unloading of the Carnival a doddle.
The Carnival is powered by Kia’s tried and tested 2.2-litre Smartstream CRDi turbodiesel engine that boasts 148kW at 3 800rpm and 440Nm from 1750rpm. Kia’s eight-speed torque-convertor automatic transmission seamlessly delivers this power to the front wheels. As part of Kia’s overall commitment to safety, the Carnival features a comprehensive list of standard Advanced Driver Assistance Systems including Forward Collision Assist, Blindspot Collision Avoidance, rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Leeping Assist, Blindspot View Monitor, Smart Cruise Control and Around View Monitor.
Brand new Kia Sorento hits SA
During its two-decade lifespan, the Sorento has evolved from a utilitarian all-terrain vehicle to a SUV that offers the perfect balance between premium quality and value for money. A redefined exterior design with sharper lines, high-tech details and elongated proportions give the Sorento a more confident and mature presence.
The Sorento is the first vehicle to be based on Kia’s new generation large SUV platform, and paired with a bigger body to maximise cargo and luggage space, it is one of the most versatile and spacious three-row SUVs on the road. Designers sought to maintain the robust, tough looking aesthetic of earlier generations of the Sorento, while adding more refinement and elegance. The bodywork now incorporates sharp lines and creases that result in a more confident, mature and desirable overall design.
Kia’s new Smartstream diesel powertrain offers greater fuel efficiency, lower emissions and better performance. This 2.2 litre power plant boasts 148kW at 3 800rpm and 440Nm from 1 750rpm and is paired to a new eight-speed wet double-clutch transmission. All-wheel drive models offer enhanced all-terrain capability thanks to a new Terrain Mode, which controls the car’s electronic stability control, distribution of torque and gearbox shift points according the conditions. The intuitive, tech-oriented cabin includes premium-quality materials and cutting- edge infotainment. The 12.3-inch digital driver instrument is flanked by a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment screen in the centre. These screens display information clearly within the driver’s line of sight and create an innovative wide-screen user experience. The car’s many functions can also be controlled with new haptic buttons on either side of the screen. The centre console also houses a wireless smartphone charger.
Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 paves the way for electric vehicle rollout
Hyundai’s all-electric IONIQ 5 has received numerous accolades over the past few months, including the Best Car of the Year and is also making an appearance in the film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Most recently the IONIQ 5 received one of the Autotrader Best New Cars for 2022 awards in America. The expert judges examined more than 300 models, ultimately narrowing them down to a list of 12 vehicles that they believe are a cut above the rest.
Pioneering all-electric sustainable models including the IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 also took top spot at the first-ever Best Cars of the year 2021/2022 awards. The world champions were singled out for quality, innovation, design and state of the art technology.
The IONIQ 5, Hyundai’s bespoke electric SUV features a driving range of more than 480km and is capable of being charged from 10 – 80% in just 18 minutes. Based on Hyundai’s exclusive Electric-Global Modular Platform allows for more interior space and optimised performance and forms parts of the Hyundai Motor Group’s plan to introduce 23 battery electric models and sell 1 million battery electric vehicles globally by 2025.
The IONIQ’s modern take on retro design includes Hyundai’s first clamshell hood and eye- catching V-shaped positioning lamps. Generous interior proportions were possible thanks to a 3000mm wheelbase and short front and rear overhangs. Inside a living space theme runs through the interior, embodied by the Universal Island, a moveable centre console and a flat floor where the batteries are stored. Many of the interior touch points, such as seats, headliner, door trim, floor and armrest are made of eco-friendly materials, reflecting Hyundai’s commitment to a cleaner more sustainable future for all. Hyundai’s Vehicle-to-Load capability sees the IONIQ 5 act as a charger on wheels, allowing drivers to power their electrical devices, homes during power outages and even other standard electric vehicles.
Hyundai adds Multicab to Staria range
Hyundai have bolstered the line up of their futuristic Staria with the addition of a Multicab variant. This five-seater van with a separate cargo area adds a level of versatility that makes it an outstanding leisure vehicle with the ability to carry large items for commercial use, too. The all-new Staria, which went on sale late last year, features a futuristic design and delivers superior ride quality and a premium driving experience. The Multicab joins the existing line-up, which consists of the Luxury, Elite and Executive in 7 to 11 seat configurations. A Staria panel van will be added to the local range later in 2022. The Staria Multicab includes many of the luxury features of the other models in the range along with the practicality of a five-seater with a large, secure separate cargo bay.
The Staria’s sleek exterior is defined by a single stroke running from front to rear and is characterised by a bold, wide radiator grille with a unique pattern. The clean silhouette is further accented by a pair of low set headlamps, and the use of the same body colour for all front parts maximises the vehicle’s modern style. The design theme continues at the rear with elongated vertical tail lamps and a low rear bumper for easy loading of cargo.
The interior of the Staria applies a simple and modern layout with emphasis on driver convenience and passenger comfort. Low beltlines and panoramic windows create a spacious, stimulating environment for the driver and passengers. An advanced 8-inch display instrument display, touch screen centre fascia and a shift lever add to the modern yet practical theme. The infotainment system offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality and also acts as the display for the reverse camera.
The front wheel drive Staria is powered by a 2.2-litre VGT turbo diesel engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that offers 130kW and 430Nm. MacPherson strut type front suspension and a rigid rear axle with leaf springs provide exceptional ride quality and road holding. The leaf-spring rear suspension was chosen to give the Multicab increased load- carrying capability and increased towing capacity.

New Ford Ranger ready for work and play
The Ford Ranger offers a variety of new solutions to help secure cargo and fit accessories more easily. At 1 233 litres, and now 50mm wider, cargo box is one of the biggest on the market and can accommodate a standard European pallet between the wheel arches. A new rear load box access step makes climbing into the cargo box easier, and the load box now features lighting for after-hours work or play. Zone lighting allows for control of the headlights, puddle lamps, number plate lamps and box lighting via the infotainment system or FordPass app to illuminate a 360-degree area around the vehicle. Inside the cab is more storage space too, from under-seat storage to retractable cup holders and a variety of cubby holes. There is space under the bonnet for a second battery and the vehicle has been pre-wired with auxiliary switches, making it easier to install accessories like driving lights and winches. A redesign of the under-seat storage offers more room in the bins underneath the rear seats, while the rear seat backs now fold perfectly flat.
Key details on upcoming Ford Ranger Raptor revealed
The second-generation Ford Ranger Raptor is set to raise the off-road performance bakkie bar. The biggest news for performance fans is the fitment of a new twin-turbo 3.0-litre Eco Boost V6 producing 292kW and 583Nm. Tuned by Ford Performance the engine is said to deliver immediate response to throttle inputs and a race-bred anti-lag system enables rapid delivery of boost on demand. In Baja mode, for example, this anti-lag system continues to spool the turbocharger for up to three seconds after the driver backs off the throttle, allowing for faster resumption of acceleration out of corners or between gears. This new V6 engine will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission of which each gear is programmed with its own boost profile for effortless acceleration on all surfaces. An electronically controlled active exhaust system amplifies the engine note in line with four selectable drive modes.
The chassis of the Ranger Raptor has received a variety of upgrades. These include a series of unique mounts and reinforcements for elements including the C-pillar, load box and spare wheel as well as unique frames for a variety of components in order to handle punishing off-road conditions. All-new tough, lightweight aluminium upper and lower control arms, long travel front and rear suspension and refined Watt’s link rear end have been designed to deliver more control across rough terrain at high speed. Damping is now taken care of by Fox 2.5-inch Live Valve dampers that are able to adapt in real time to changing conditions as well as via the various drive modes.
Helping the Ranger Raptor to handle any conditions are seven selectable drive modes including the off-road orientated Baja mode for extreme high-speed off-roading. For the first time, the Ranger Raptor gets an advanced permanent four-wheel drive system with an all-new electronically controlled on-demand two-speed transfer case, combined with front and rear locking differentials.

Toyota Fortuner range receives specification upgrades
The Toyota Fortuner has consistently been one of South Africa’s most popular SUVs. With regular appearances at the top of the sales charts, it is a vehicle that fits perfectly into the lifestyles of many South Africans. A big part of this success is thanks to the way in which Toyota continually responds to customers’ evolving needs.
Toyota has once again followed this strategy and the following specification enhancements and adaptations have been incorporated into the Fortuner range. 2.8 models now feature dual-zone climate control, while the range-topping VX grade inherits a Panoramic View Monitor with selectable view as well as an upgrade to the 11-speaker JBL Premium Audio system. The on- board satellite navigation has now been omitted due to the preferred usage of smartphone navigation apps via the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.
Henceforth all Fortuner models will be equipped with an enhanced Smart Entry System with additional security measures. VX models will now feature the additional functionality of the Toyota Safety Sense system that incorporates Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The proven 2.4 and 2.8 GD-6 engines remain unchanged. The 2.4 GD-6 offers 110kW and 400Nm and is available in both six-speed manual and six-speed automatic. Toyota Dyna rebranded as Hino 200
The popular Toyota Dyna light truck will in future be sold as a Hino 200 series. In addition, the Dyna 150 becomes the Hino 300-310, with the 3 signifying its 3-ton load capacity, and the 10 denoting a 100-horsepower engine. This change comes as responsibility for the Dyna range is shifted from Toyota to within the Hino range.
When it arrived in 1965, the Dyna was the first truck to be offered for sale by Toyota South Africa. To date, more than 50 000 Dynas have been sold in an uninterrupted run of 56 years, making it one of the longest running vehicle nameplates on the local market. Throughout the years the Dyna has proved extremely popular in the medium truck segment and has built up a reputation for productivity, reliability and durability. One of the Dyna’s biggest selling points is the fact that it slots into the below 3 500kg GVM category, which means the driver only needs a B-type or Code 8 to legally drive a Dyna. The Hino 200 310 will continue to be sold in this classification category and changes are merely cosmetic. Updates include a Hino badge above the front grille, flanked by badges bearing the Hino name and 200 series designation. The grille has been updated to reflect the Hino family styling. The 310 models will be denoted by a decal on the leading edge of the lower doors.
Inside, the steering wheel has been treated to Hino branding. The instrument panel has been redesigned for improved visibility and readability, which includes a larger speedometer with revised information and warning lights together with and LCD monitor. Toyota Gazoo Racing unveils GR GT3 Concept and GRMN Yaris
Toyota Gazoo Racing is committed to further accelerating customer motorsport activities to make the world of motorsports more sustainable. As such they have unveiled the GR GT3 Concept. Toyota Gazoo Racing intends to use feedback and technologies refined through participation in various motorsports activities to develop both GT3 and mass production cars as well as even better motorsports bred cars.
Following the global success of the GR Yaris, Toyota has pulled the covers off an even hotter version dubbed the GRMN, a model that embodies the total tuning concept. The development of the GRMN Yaris began from the desire to deliver cars to customers that can be tailored to individual needs like in the world of motorsport. As such body rigidity has been enhanced, weight has been reduced, while width has been increased and the vehicle has been lowered.
A close ratio gearbox makes efficient use of the engines power band while front and rear mechanical limited slip differentials replace the Torsen versions found in the GR Yaris. A reinforced metal matrix clutch has also been added. Lightweight high rigidity carbon fibre has been used to shave weight from the bonnet, roof and rear spoiler and the rear seats have been removed, for a total weight saving of 20kg. Engine power remains at 200kW but torque has been increased by 20Nm to 390Nm. The GRMN will be offered with two bespoke packages, a Circuit Pack and a Rally Pack. The Circuit pack includes 18-inch BBS wheels, 18-inch brakes, Bilstein shock absorbers, a carbon fibre rear spoiler, side skirts and a lip spoiler. The Rally pack consists of a GR shock absorber and short stabiliser link set, under guard set and a GR roll bar.
